Chico is located within easy driving distance of Sacramento, San Francisco, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, including Lassen National Park. Big Chico Creek winds its way from the hills under a canopy of trees through Bidwell Park and the Chico State campus. Although the campus has grown substantially since 1887-from eight to 130 acres and from ninety to 14,000 students-a sense of community remains strong at Chico. The atmosphere on the campus is determined in part by its rural setting; the openness and friendliness found in the campus community sometimes come as a surprise to those more familiar with large urban campuses. This openness extends to academic matters, where students find that their classes are small, their professors are accessible, and that this is a place where teaching really matters. High standards, a reputation for excellence, and the desire to make higher education available to all, particularly those held back by cultural or economic barriers, will continue to be the agenda for Chico State as we approach the twenty first century.
